HID conversion kits
MG headlights, even with Halogen coversions, are pretty poor.
Anyone know whether HID conversion kits can be fitted to a V8 ?

HID conversion kits
I asked this question some 18 months ago but received criticism for changing the appearance of the car. However, this does not occur as it is ONLY the bulb that is replaced in the original headlamp unit and it is not detectable. Although quite expensive, but it is not the easiest of jobs to undertake, the benefit is well worth the effort. If you want any further information please get in touch.

HID conversion kits
Moss have HID H4 headlamp conversion kits on their website as an upgrade to standard H4 type bulbs but they stress that their kit does not include the HID lamp unit itself. If you still have sealed beam units fitted you will first need to upgrade these to a H4 Halogen kit before the HID kit can be installed. Their HID conversion kit is advertised at £153.21 and their Wipac Quad Optic Halogen headlamp kit at £36.73 a pair, so a total of £189.94. I think the Moss prices include VAT but I assume P&P would be extra. You can see the webpage at:

Nigel,
We welcome contributions to the V8NOTES series so do let me have a note with further information on fitting the kits and any other information for fellow members, together with any photos. I can then pop it into a V8NOTE and then it will be available as a reference resource on the V8 website. My email address is on the LHS of the V8 website homepage. If any other member has similar information they would like to contribute, do get in touch.

Nigel,
It sounds as though you may have experience in this. Is the end result dramatically different. I'm not too worried about cost and I'm an electronics engineer so I'm not frightened of the fitting.

HID conversion kits
Drummond,
The end result brings the headlights up to modern day Bi Xenon standards and I have to say that they are as good as those fitted to my Mercedes. However, I cannot speak for the Moss conversion as I did not use them, but would agree with that you need a good quality H4 headlamps and I have opted for those from Cibie which give better definition.

A number of owners from the North London MG club have found a company to offer the parts for about £80. I'll let you know how we get on!

Actually, assuming you have already (and sensibly) upgraded to Halogen bulbs there are two further stages of improvement without going to the cost of an HID installation. First, and not visible to the naked eye, fit 100watt halogen bulbs (actually these used to be illegal of course) and it is advisable to fit relays as the current can burn out the switch contacts....... Second, fit the tripod headlights available from RV8 owner SVC (see Lifeline for info); on these the tripods reflects light back into the main reflector so you get a bonus. A further point is that these tripod units incorporate sidelights to supplement the standard candles. I know that these are not standard for the V8 but many MGs have used them over the years.
