Tyres - The Agony of Choice!
Time has come to replace the V8s tyres. After much searching I have decided to go for a set of the CONTINENTAL ECO 3 CONTACTs - 175/80/14H. Although I'm aware of the Register's tyre survey and that the subject of tyres is a popular one, I do feel more information would be useful.

1. How do you decide on a particular make of tyre to buy?

2. What's the best width size on a 14" rim? (175, 185 or even 195?)

3. What tyres are best avoided?

4. What pressures work best for road conditions?

5. What budget & Premium tyres work well on a V8?

Tyres - The Agony of Choice!
I've been through this before too. It all depends, Julian, on what you want from the car itself and how you actually drive it. Thus one considers initially comfort, cornering, price and wear of course. I wanted comfort and do not throw my RV8 around all over the place. If one reads tyre testing reports, one can get a rough idea of handling in the wet, braking distances and wear not to forget noise. After that its a question of price which I tended to put at the bottom of my particular list! I can't advise on the tyre sizes you mention, but am sure someone will help you on that part of your message.

Tyres - The Agony of Choice!
If you type "Continental tyres" in the "Search by key word" box alongside and also check the "Include archived messages in the search" box, you will find some useful links pop up to earlier postings from fellow members on their tyre choice and views.

From talking with Julian I can see there is a difficulty with the tyre survey we have on the V8 website in that it accumulates the historic data provided by members but does not reveal the current trends in tyre choice which is really the information fellow members will be interested to see. So I am beginning to wonder how the survey might be changed or whether it should be discontinued altogether and instead links provided to good quality tyre reviews available in reputable magazines or from consumer test bodies like Which? magazine. I would welcome fellow members' views.

Tyres - The Agony of Choice!
Yes, Victor you are right of course. Each season new tyre specs. arrive on the market with often superior braking in the wet or improved wear or roadholding. The importance of these tests is the elimination of the inevitable cheap import tyres which, although tempting, have a lot to be desired regarding safety features or wear. Some of them are even quite dangerous. Thus it is always wise to update the tyre data one can collate via these independent reports.
