Rear Disc Brakes
Here is a little puzzle - has anyone fitted rear disc brakes to the standard RV8 suspension set up?

Rear Disc Brakes
I am just about to fit a Hoyle IRS to my RV8 and that has disc brakes, of course. When I offered the comment to John Hoyle that these would probably be better than the drum brakes he advised that the front brakes do most of the work and that the perfomance of the disc brakes on the rear would be about the same as the drum brakes. One of the faults with the drum brakes however is that the self adjusters often rust up or, after a winter of standing idle, the cylinders will leak onto the garage floor and onto the linings. The after- market cylinders are not as good as the original equipment unfortunately so once the originals are discarded you are into greater general maintenance. I would prefer disc brakes for the ease of changing pads as against linings which involve much more work.

Rear Disc Brakes
I'm not sure that you really need discs at the back of either an RV8 or MGB/GT/V8. As Angus said the front brakes do most of the work and the drums only provide a bit of balance to the braking effect.

Another downside may be that the handbrake is also less effective, in my experience handbrakes on cars with rear discs always seem to be less "grippy", possibly due to the smaller contact patch of the pads over the shoes.

Rear Disc Brakes
I have the Hoyle rear set up on my GTV8 conversion and I can confirm that the rear discs (from a Sierra or Granada) don't actually feel any different from drums. But they are self adjusting and easier to maintain, and they look good behind alloy wheels. As for the handbrake, I find it perfectly adequate and it will hold the car securely on any hill I have encountered so far.
