Sticky brakes? Sticky clutch?
Hello to all,

I'm experiencing a certain "stickyness" on my GTV8. This occurs after bringing the car to a halt (normal or hard). When I release the clutch, it is as if the handbrake was still on, and that I've released it too promptly. The car comes into motion with an urge. At first I thought that the clutch was sticky and decded to renew it, as well as the master and secondary clutch pumps, the release bearing etc. The brakes themselves work perfectly - tried on the rollingb road as well. I've already checked the brakes front and rear. There is no oil leakage, and the disc and drum pistons do look OK. When actioning the brakes at engine idling speed, there is no reduction of the RPMs, nor is there any oil smoke emanating through the exhaust.

Is this a known or typical problem? Has anybody met the same problems? What does it require to solve the problem? Many thanks for helping and best regards.

Do you have single circuit brakes, where the brake master cylinder and brake servo are not physically attached? If so, I had a similar problem after I adjusted the brake light switch on my car. When I adjusted the switch I got it a bit too far in, the brakes seemed fine at first when the car was cold and at rest, but after a short drive when things warmed up the they started binding and felt like the handbrake was partly on. The switch should be adjusted so there is 3.2 mm of free play at the brake pedal rubber in the car, although in reality you could have more free play just to be sure.

Sticky brakes? Sticky clutch?
Hello Graeme,
Thanks for the quick RE. I'll check this already asap. Indeed it doesn't happen when the car is cold... I'll inform you. All other info still most welcome. Greets from rainy Belgium.

Have you checked the condition of the flexible hoses? I had what sounds to be a similar problem with the clutch on my MGC. The hose was beaking down internally with a flap of rubber moving to act as a non return valve.

I had a similar-sounding problem years ago when I owned an 1800 Roadster. The brake pipes we corroded internally. When braking, the pressure was sufficient to push the brake fluid through the pipes and activate the brakes but the artificially reduced internal diameter stopped the pressure reducing when I first took my foot off the pedal. After a few moments, the pressure reduced sufficiently to release the brakes. Solution? New pipes throughout!
