V8 Roadster offside engine mount
Hi, still in my infancy with the V8 so I was wondering if anyone else had experience of this problem: the block hugger exhaust manifold on the offside is touching the inner wing and the head of the rear exhaust manifold bolt is very close to the steering column. Visually the engine also appears to be leaning towards the offside so I assume there is a problem with the engine mount which I will shortly replace. Has anyone else experienced this?

In V8NOTE260 on engine stabiliser bars, the engine torque effect on the engine mountings is mentioned - "the torque twist on the more powerful engines was a significant problem for the mountings and with contact between the engine and the steering column." If your V8 Roadster engine is modified to produce more than the standard Factory V8 output of 137bhp, then the righthand mounting can get very tired over time. From a search of the detailed Index to the 12 volumes of our V8 Workshop Notes series you will see under the section "Engine" there are several V8NOTES worth reading on this topic - notes 11, 11a, 174 and 260. You will find V8NOTE260 is available on the V8 website from the V8NOTES Contents webpage. A copy of the Index is available as a convenient download and is provided on an "open to all" basis.

Hello David

Welcome to one of V8 conversions 'little issues'. The engine is mounted with spacers located between the engine mounting brackets bolted to the engine block on both sides, and the actual rubber mounting blocks. There is usually two spacers per side. By moving spacers from you passengers side to the drivers side, your engine block would move towards the passengers side of the car. By adding spacers to both sides you will raise the engine in the engine bay etc etc.

The physical removal/fitting of the spacers can be problematic. You cannot assess the clearance until the manifolds are fitted, and once fitted it is very difficult to work at the spacers. The solution is to remove all the spacers and elongate and widen the two mounting holes, this enables the spacers to be fitted/removed WITHOUT actually removing the securing nuts and bolts. The spacers are mounted on a downward slope so cannot fall out even if the mounting screws work loose. Fitting longer than necessary bolts means that the engine mountings can be slackened to an extent that permits the engine to be raised via a crane or trolley jack under the protected sump. The clearance achieved allows the spacers to be removed or refitted via a pair of long nosed pliers. In this way you can lower the engine and establish clearances all round before you finally tighten the mountings.

Another issue can arise when the underside of the exhaust manifolds make contact with the inner wing panel, a wooden block and hammer can be used to dress down the inner panel and provide additional clearance, be aware of the shockabsorber under this panel, and check the gap below if this work is required.

Finally you might find it necessary to modify the top lip of the chassis legs where they come into close proximity with the exhaust down pipes. Bending the top lip back at 45 degrees for two inches on each side gives a 1/4" additional clearance. Don't forget to deploy a large blob of childrens plasticine before carefully closing the bonnet - dings cost money. Hope this helps,

Victor and Bill, many thanks for your replies and valuable information, it is always nice to know that you are not alone when problems occur! The car was converted to V8 back in 1988 and I suspect that the engine mounts may well not have been changed since then. I have purchased a new engine mount and a couple of spacers so I will swop them over in the next few weeks. As requested I will also register my conversion date information. Once again many thanks.

Clive Wheatley also supply mounts of differnt thicknesses to move the engine over away from the steering column - no experience of them myself but I assume they have used them to great effect to tool them up etc.
